Question For People On O2

A myPHteam Member asked a question 💭

I noticed that I don't give myself a chance to rest when I'm walking, and it makes me very SOB. For some reason my mind thinks I need to get to where I'm going really fast. I'd like to know if anyone has suggestions of how I can remind myself to slow down.

Look up purse-lip breathing. If you stop and do it a few times, it may increase your oxygen.

Just stop a few minutes and regain your breath then realize it is time to slow down and smell the roses

The hurry up and do or get to wherever ur going sounds like anxiety. It's pretty common for any of us who suffer from breathing difficulties.

Certainly! Here is some detailed information about oxygen therapy for people with pulmonary hypertension:

Oxygen Therapy for Pulmonary Hypertension

What is Oxygen Therapy?
- Purpose: Oxygen therapy is used to treat hypoxia (low levels of oxygen in the blood) in people with pulmonary hypertension (PH).
- Prescription: It is only available by prescription and tailored to individual needs.

Types of Oxygen Delivery Devices:
1. Oxygen-Gas Cylinders:
- Steel containers filled with highly compressed oxygen.
- Important to frequently check the length of the tubing attached to your device.

2. Oxygen Concentrators:
- Machines that collect oxygen from the air as it’s needed.

3. Liquid-Oxygen Devices:
- Deliver high-concentration oxygen that’s more compact and easier to store.

Usage Scenarios:
- Intermittent Use: Some people may only need oxygen therapy during specific activities like walking, eating, sleeping, or during airline flights.
- Resting Hypoxia: Others may need it even when sitting still.
- Long-Term Oxygen Therapy (LTOT): Required 24 hours a day for maximum benefits, but must be used at least 15 hours a day to be effective.

Considerations:
- Travel: Bringing oxygen therapy equipment during travel can be cumbersome and expensive. Check regulations before traveling by air, train, or boat.
- Safety: Oxygen is a fire hazard. Do not smoke or use oxygen around open flames or anything that can cause sparks. Keep equipment at least six feet away from potential sources of flame.
- Storage: Ensure oxygen tanks are stored on level, stable flooring, secured from tipping, and located safely away from hazards.

Monitoring and Adjustments:
- Sleep Monitoring: If low oxygen is suspected during sleep, an overnight sleep study may be required.
- Equipment Changes: Once prescribed, equipment changes are typically not allowed for five years unless there is a significant change in oxygen requirements or condition.

Additional Tips:
- Adequate Oxygen Output: Different people need different amounts of oxygen. High-flow nasal cannulas or reservoir cannulas may be necessary for those requiring higher levels of oxygen.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Programs designed to improve strength, lung function, and overall well-being can be beneficial.
