Lifestyle Adjustments and PH

Posted on November 19, 2018

Pulmonary hypertension brings many ups and downs. It can be difficult to adjust to new or worsening symptoms. Some people experience shortness of breath while doing familiar tasks. Some experience fatigue, chest pain, bloody noses, and depression.

On myPHteam, the social network and online support group for those living with pulmonary hypertension, members talk about a range of personal experiences and struggles. Lifestyle adjustments are some of the top topics most discussed.

Here are some lifestyle adjustments myPHteam members use:

• Light home exercise to improve lung function and fight depression/anxiety:

"Making BFFs with my home treadmill and some additional physical therapy have helped a great deal with lung function, depression, and anxiety. Being a part of this awesome group has made everything tolerable."

• Decrease work hours and be on feet less:

"I did have to decrease my work hours to 3 days a week ,8 hour shifts, instead of four 10 hour shifts. It has helped to be less fatigued at the end of the day and work week."

• Find an outlet to talk about the emotions of PH:

"Every time I try to talk about PH I start crying... I hate to be complaining but this is my let it out page."

Here are some question-and-answer threads about lifestyle adjustments:

How has your outlook changed since becoming diagnosed with PH?

Has anyone experienced their PH symptoms getting worse after starting CPAP therapy with oxygen?

What lifestyle changes have you made since becoming diagnosed?

Can you relate?
