Members shared their varied care teams for managing pulmonary arterial hypertension, with most seeing PAH specialists who are also pulmonologists, often alongside cardiologists and other specialists depending on their individual conditions. Several members emphasized the importance of seeking care at accredited PH centers or through specialists listed on the Pulmonary Hypertension Association website, noting that regular pulmonologists often lack the expertise to manage severe or complex PAH cases. A recurring theme was the value of coordinated care teams where each doctor understands their specific role, with members describing how specialists work together across hospital systems to provide comprehensive treatment while avoiding unnecessary duplicate testing.

The doctor I am seeing at the University of WA is a pulmonologist but specializes in PAH.

Not at all. Sometimes I have to bring test results from one to the other so I don't get tests repeated unnecessarily. One side benefit to the specific regular pulmonologist I see is that he is with a different hospital system. And sometimes one hospital system offers tests or services the other doesn't. My regular pulmonologist arranged for my CPET as well as put in the initial order for my pulmonary therapy through his hospital as a favor to us.

I guess I could stop seeing the regular pulmonologist, but he knows a lot about the Bleomycin Toxicity in my lungs and my PH specialist wouldn't immediately be able to help me with that if I get a flare up. Plus I think having access to a different hospital system is a good thing...where I live anyway.

I go to UTSW in Dallas at the Pulmonary clinic. I see a PAH specialist who is also a pulmonologist, a heart failure specialist and have a second Pulmonary specialist that treats my Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis and I also have a Rheumatologist all within UTSW. They work together. Its a longer drive but lwell worth it. They saved my life when my regular pulmonologist refused to refer me to UTSW for 2 years because he didn't think I was at the level I needed specialty care
