I'm Confused About How The Medicare D "catastrophic" Period Works. I Will Call My D Provider But, Does It Kick In After 1 Fulfillment?

I read that the 2024 threshold is 8K...but wouldn't that 8K be exceeded with one fill of a pricey drug like Opsumit? Supposedly grants count towards the threshold...and maybe even what the Medicare provider pays too???

UPDATE: I have been advised that just the ONE Opsumit refill in January was enough to put me into the Catastrophic phase which would mean no more co-pays in 2024. I'll fully believe it when my February refill gets processed...but I am so encouraged!

@A myPHteam Member that's my understanding. When you're told you have a devastating diagnosis like PAH, no doctor tells you about the tremendous financial burden. I feel beyond blessed that for the second year in a row I've been able to secure co-pay assistance from TAF. With Medicare medication maximum OOP decreasing in 2025 I'm hopeful organizations like TAF and PAN will be able to provide more assistance to even more people.

I transitioned to Medicare/Medicare Part D last September. I'm currently on Tadalafil and Ambrisentan. I get co-pay assistance from TAF. By December of 2023 I hit the catastrophic phase. This year I will hit it again, only much sooner. The co-pays covered by TAF count towards my maximum out of pocket. It gets much better in 2025 when the maximum out of pocket decreases to $2000.

I had Pan foundation before and they ran out of money. So the makers of my medicine suggested Assistance Fund. So I've been on that grant for a few years. But there is always a rush to re enroll every year.

I have always had a grant to pay my co-pays. I have a Medicare advantage plan. I go into catastrophic coverage by the second month. The copays are alittle less after you reach it. I never have to worry about the donut hole. The copay for the first month is the largest. I have been very lucky to get approved for my grant so no out of pocket cost. I am so grateful! My income is low because I'm on disability through work and social security.
