Exercise

A myPHteam Member asked a question 💭
Charlotte, NC

Besides PH, I have terrible back pain any time I'm on my feet. I also suffer from hip bursitis and have a torn meniscus, thus have hip and knee pain although not as severe as the lower back. At 87, and with other physical problems, what kind of exercise would be safe?

Members offered compassionate guidance to an 87-year-old with pulmonary hypertension, back pain, hip bursitis, and a torn meniscus who was seeking safe exercise options, with the most consistent recommendations being to pursue pulmonary rehabilitation through Medicare, in-home physical therapy, or chair yoga tailored to individual limitations. Several members suggested practical low-impact activities like water therapy classes at the YMCA, gentle walking at home with rest breaks, recumbent stationary bikes, a rebounder with a handlebar for lymphatic drainage, and pelvic tilts or bridging exercises, while emphasizing the importance of supportive footwear and doctor consultation before starting any new regimen. A recurring theme was meeting the person where they are, acknowledging transportation and mobility barriers, and encouraging small, achievable steps that prioritize safety and stamina over intensity.

What kind of footwear do you have? That's important when standing for long periods of time. You can try some gently pelvic tilts, bridging exercises, clam shells, marching in place, and light walking on grass or turf.

Maybe chair yoga would be the easiest low impact for you there is also a daily regimen that you can do in your bed. Just Google it. But first talk to your Dr because he is your best friend for these types of things
