What Level Of Exertion Is Appropriate For PH?

A myPHteam Member asked a question 💭

I am curious about finding balance. How much is too much and how little is not enough. Bottom line is it “seems” like my capacity to exercise is diminishing. To put in to perspective I can walk about one mile in what is considered hilly terrain. Level walk area (not rocky or bumpy). Initially 7 months ago this was no problem, now I need to use an oxygen concentrator, or I get shortness of breath, lightheaded, heavy chest, very fatigued. The oxygen helps significantly. I think a real good way to know your limits is to do pulmonary rehab. Supervised excersize. Also, something my first PH specialist told me was excersize is good, exertion is good, but never to the point of huffing and puffing. You never want to huff and puff!

Exercise tolerance is going to be different for everyone. You may need to adjust your exercise routine to suit your limitations. Either way, use your oxygen. I used to tell my patients that the general rule of thumb is to walk half the distance they feel able to. You still have to get back home after all. A recombinant bicycle (or pedaler) is an excellent suggestion as is cardiopulmonary rehab. You might consider searching on YouTube for chair exercise videos too.

My cardiologist told me to walk or ride my recumbant bike for 30 min a day. Of course, wanting to do more, I upped it to an hour. I can't do ot for an hour without getting light headed... so 30 minutes, at least for me, is all I can do

Thank you very much. Until I get some hands on cardiopulmonary help I think I will just stick with what I am doing. The supplemental oxygen has been very helpful.
